Harrison Avenue in Lakeview This August: Restaurants & Events

Stand on the corner of Harrison Avenue and Memphis Street on a weekday afternoon and you will see contractors carrying flat boxes of Mediterranean tile into a building that, until a few weeks ago, was still branded as a seafood boil house. The address is 900 Harrison. It is one of the most-watched storefronts in Lakeview, and by mid-July of this year, it belonged to a new tenant: a new Byblos restaurant headed to New Orleans' Lakeview neighborhood, opening at 900 Harrison Avenue, taking over the space most previously occupied by Boil & Barrel.

That single sentence, if you have lived here more than a few years, tells a longer story than it looks.

The Corner That Won't Sit Still

Most of Harrison Avenue has held its shape for decades. One corner has not. Track the tenancy at 900 Harrison and you get a compressed history of how the street's ambitions have shifted:

  • 1990s to 2010s: For a decade, it was a casual concept from Susan Spicer called Mondo.
  • Late 2010s: The Italian restaurant Elle J's followed.
  • 2023 to March 2025: Outpost 45, developed by the operators of the popular Velvet Cactus just down the street, made it about two years before closing in March.
  • August 2025: A restaurant called Boil and Barrel opened at the location in August, run by a group with ties to Frankie & Johnny's and, tellingly, to Byblos.
  • Mid-July 2026: Byblos itself takes the space.

Look closely at the partnerships. Partners David McCelvey, Hicham Khodr, and Tarek Tay registered a business called F&J on Harrison for the Lakeview address. Khodr is a founder of Byblos. In other words, the group that opened Boil & Barrel last summer is essentially rebranding into a concept they already know how to run. The corner did not fail. It got upgraded to a proven regional operator with, as the announcement notes, a full bar and a covered outdoor patio.

The takeaway for anyone who lives here: 900 Harrison is not a cursed address. It is the neighborhood's most valuable test kitchen, and the tests keep getting less speculative.

What Actually Stays

If 900 Harrison is where new bets are placed, the rest of the corridor is where they get validated. The businesses that anchor a resident's week are, almost without exception, the ones that have been here for a generation or longer.

Little Miss Muffin at 766 Harrison has been operated by Monique Duclaux since she purchased the business from her grandmother in 1992, and was founded in 1970 as a Hallmark store originally located across the street. Fifty-six years on one block, two generations of ownership. Across the street sits NOLA Beans at 762 Harrison, which opened in 2008 by Lakeview residents Danette Murret and Kristi Palmer, who lost everything in the storm. Down the block, The Steak Knife at 888 Harrison Avenue has been on Harrison Avenue since the 1970s, and Lakeview Harbor at 911 Harrison has been in business since 1993.

Junior's on Harrison, at 789 Harrison, is the youngest of the anchor cohort. A strangely familiar, Lakeview neighborhood joint, they keep downstairs family friendly and upstairs open as a full bar and balcony. It has now been on that corner longer than three of the concepts that failed at 900 Harrison, combined.

Read the street this way and the pattern gets clearer: turnover at one high-visibility corner is not a signal of instability. It is the way a stable neighborhood absorbs new ideas without disrupting the businesses that hold daily life together.

A Walk Down Harrison, August Version

Here is how to actually use the corridor this month, corner by corner, without wasting a trip.

Morning, Canal end. Start with a coffee and pastry at NOLA Beans. The rhythm at the counter is the same it has been since 2008 — grab a coffee and a pastry at NOLA Beans, or an ice cream cone from Creole Creamery, and you'll feel like a local as the baristas quickly learn your name. If you are running errands, this is the block for it: Lakeview Grocery at 801 Harrison covers the pantry.

Midday, middle blocks. Little Miss Muffin at 766 Harrison is the neighborhood's go-to for a gift you did not plan to buy. Duclaux stocks a rotating selection of local artists' work and, according to her own goals for the corridor, wants to see Harrison Avenue achieve national Main Street designation. That is not a marketing line. That is a benchmark, and it changes how you read the street's paving, planters, and shopfront upkeep.

Evening, 800 and 900 blocks. The Steak Knife at 888 remains the white-tablecloth default. Junior's at 789 handles the casual family dinner. And by the time you are reading this, Byblos at 900 will either be opening its doors or a few weeks in — worth checking before you walk over, because the new location is expected to open around mid-July and staged openings are common on this corridor.

Nightcap. Parlay's has the longest bar in Orleans parish and is a favorite local watering hole. On a slow August Tuesday, that length is more comfort than boast.

The August Calendar Worth Blocking Off

Harrison Avenue does not host its own festival in August. What it does have is proximity — five minutes to City Park, ten to the lakefront — and a citywide dining month that quietly reshapes menus on the street itself.

  • Coolinary New Orleans, August 1 to 31. A month-long dining promotion featuring specially priced menus at participating restaurants across the city. Worth calling ahead to see which Harrison Avenue kitchens are participating this year.
  • Thursdays at Twilight, City Park Pavilion. City Park hosts four Thursdays at Twilight events during August, a popular concert series featuring mint juleps and an array of musicians. From most of Lakeview, this is a bike ride, not a drive.
  • Harrison Avenue Marketplace. The Lakeview Civic Improvement Association runs a monthly market at the Lakeview Grocery lot; on the second Wednesday of the month, business and craft vendors gather at the Lakeview Grocery parking lot to show off what the neighborhood has to offer.
  • Looking ahead: if you are already planning the fall, the Beignet Festival is happening on Sat 07 Nov 2026 from 11:00 AM onwards at New Orleans City Park, and the National Fried Chicken Festival returns to Lakeshore Drive October 2 through 4.

What the Churn Tells You About Your Block

If you own a home in Lakeview, the practical read on Byblos taking 900 Harrison is not about one restaurant. It is about who is willing to place a bet on this corridor in 2026.

Ten years ago, the operator who signed a lease at 900 Harrison was a chef with a single concept and a strong reputation. Today, the operator is a regional group that already runs multiple locations of a proven brand and has enough infrastructure to convert an existing seafood buildout into a Mediterranean grill inside a month. That is a different kind of tenant. It suggests the block's foot traffic and rents now clear a bar that they did not clear a decade ago, and that the risk-adjusted case for a national-adjacent operator to be here is stronger than the case for a first-time restaurateur.

For homeowners, that shift matters more than any single opening. Retail depth is one of the quiet factors that determines whether a residential corridor holds value through a soft market. The businesses that stayed through the last twenty years — the shop at 766, the cafe at 762, the steakhouse at 888 — are the reason the corner at 900 keeps attracting bigger tenants. Not the other way around.
